Log out and log back in and you should now be able to attach USB devices to your VM! MapSource was able to detect my nuvi and I was able to send map data to it. Then select your account, click Advanced Settings, click the User Privileges tab, then check Use VirtualBox virtualization solution. I am reporting against previous version because I first noticed the problem there. Note, that I already have newer kernel - 2.6.30+20 - installed (and the dmesg output below is from that version). First known-bad version 2.6.29 Last known-good version 2.6.25. To allow your account to be able to do this simply go to System -> Administration -> Users and Groups. The Garmin MapSource running in Wine seemed not affected though, at least for upload.
Garmin mapsource for linux update#
If U really need a propriety Garmin map update U will have to use a Windoze PC with MapSource on it. However, on linux platform there is no corresponding tool to MapSource AFAIK. If U use one of the above map sources it doesn't matter. gmt-helper is garmin map extractor helper. I think I did try it using Wine but not successfully.

This turned out to be just insufficient permission. Garmin does not support linux with its Basecamp or Mapsource software. The device was detected but the option was grayed out. Now the issue I ran into was when I tried to attach the USB device to my VM.
Garmin mapsource for linux install#
To use USB 2.0 you will need to download and install the VirtualBox Extension Pack.

This is very easy to do on VirtualBox, you just go to your VM’s settings -> USB -> Enable USB/USB 2.0 controllers, which is probably already set by default.

Since I already have a Windows XP virtual machine running on VirtualBox (which I use for work as our company’s remote access software doesn’t support Linux either) I figured I could probably just allow the VM to access the host’s USB devices. However, the software only supports Windows and Mac so I had no choice but to do it on Windows. Linux is a perfect operating system for programmers, this is because it is. I bought a new GPS recently ( Garmin nuvi 1350LMT) and wanted to upload new maps to it using Garmin’s MapSource software. Garmin Mapsource is not develloped anymore, but version runs still pretty.
